As Jesus was dying on the cross the Bible tells us that He cried out in a loud voice, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” (Matthew 27:46)
Have you ever taken time to consider what the answer to that question would be? Why did the Father forsake, or abandon, the Son? What possible motivation could the Father have had to forsake Jesus and leave Him crying out asking “Why?!?”
And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” (Matthew 27:46 NKJV)
Whenever the Bible leaves questions open ended, it is beneficial to take time to think about the answer. Throughout the Gospels Jesus asked questions that just sort of hang there, unanswered. Questions like the ones in Mark 4:40, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?” There are answers to these questions. What are they?!? Take time to wrestle with these questions and consider the possible answers.
In regards to the question Jesus asked on the cross, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”, the answer is YOU. The reason God abandoned Jesus was so He could get to you.
